Knysna police are investigating a case of attempted murder after a police officer was stabbed while on duty on Monday morning.
Police spokesperson, Captain Malcom Pojie, says members of the K-9 unit were called out to an incident where two men were fighting in Main Street.
He says the police Sergeant was stabbed several times in his head when he tried to intervene between the two fighting men.
Pojie says during the fracas the policeman's gun went off wounding the suspect in his lower abdominal area.
He says both men have been taken to hospital.
"The reason for the fight is unknown but while they intervened one of the men attacked the police sergeant and stabbed him several times. He sustained a stab wound in his head. He fought off the suspect and a shot went off. Both of them were transported to the Provincial hospital in Knysna for medical attention. We will off course refer one of the cases to IPID for further investigation" he said
