Knysna: More than 100 people arrested for various crimes


 More than a hundred people were arrested during special crime prevention operations by police and several other law enforcement agencies in Knysna over the past week.

Police spokesman Constable Chris Spies said officers carried out various stop-and-searches, set up vehicle checkpoints and roadblocks and did spot checks at suspected illegal liquor outlets and drug distribution points.

Spies said police had searched 245 people as well as 125 vehicles and arrested 118 suspects.

"Police arrested 18 people for drug-related activities and confiscated drugs with an estimated value of R2500. It included Tik, Mandrax and dagga. Seven suspects were arrested for driving a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, four suspects for possession of dangerous weapons and four for being in possession of suspected stolen property," Spies said.
He added that two people had also been arrested for selling alcohol without a license and liquor with an estimated value of R3000 was confiscated.

"All these operations were conducted in Swarthout Street in Hornlee, the Knysna taxi rank in Nelson Street, Smutsville in Sedgefield, Mbobo Street in Joodsekamp and Bluegum Street in Rheenendal. It forms part of our continued efforts to improve safety in our communities."
