Knysna police have opened an inquest docket, following a drowning at Coney Glen.
The National Sea Rescue Institute says the local man, aged 34, got into difficulties while swimming on Saturday.
NSRI spokesperson, Craig Lambinon says it is suspected that rough sea conditions and rip currents may have contributed to the man getting into difficulty in the surf.
He says bystanders pulled the man from the water and tried to resuscitate him, but despite efforts by paramedics, he was declared dead at the scene.
