Knysna boat accident does not reflect on safety of adventure based activities

Knysna tourism says this week's boating accident in which an Indian tourist was injured does not reflect on the safety of the town's water based adventure activities.

A 52-year-old woman from India suffered fractures to her right arm and had to undergo surgery after she was flung from a charter vessel on Tuesday.

The chairperson of the Knysna Tourism Board, Greg Vogt, says the accident occurred during a high speed adventure manoeuvre.

He says fortunately the Featherbed Company's catamaran yacht, Heads Explorer, was in the vicinity and was able to recover the injured passenger and return her safely to shore.

Vogt says while the incident was unfortunate, it bore no reflection on the safety of their water based adventure activities.

"This is evident in the fast and efficient manner in which the Heads Explorer was able to recover the injured woman from the estuary and safely return her to dry land. We thank the Featherbed Company for their involvement and swift action."
"With summer season around the corner we encourage visitors and residents of Knysna alike to make the most of our estuary," Vogt concluded. "Boating activities take place under the strictest of safety regulations so that guests may confidently enjoy their experience on the sparkling waters of our estuary." Vogt said.
