Killer floods ravage Eastern Cape

Eastern Cape Local Government MEC, Mlibo Qoboshiyane, says 150 people had to be evacuated to the Port St Johns Town Hall at the weekend because of heavy rain.

The bad weather is being blamed for the deaths of at least 8 people in the eastern parts of the Eastern Cape. .

Qoboshiyane, who visited the area on Sunday, said nearly a dozen homes collapsed in Mtubane Location in the Tsolo area.

Some low level bridges have also been declared unsafe.

Qoboshiyane says the Eastern Cape Department of Human Settlements is busy assisting the displaced families whose homes have collapsed.

He said mopping up operations will begin this morning as the rain has started clearing.

Meanwhile South African Airways says several flights to East London had to be cancelled on Sunday due to the bad weather.

SAA spokesperson, Tladi Tladi, says conditions at East London Airport were below landing requirements.

He said a ground-based piece of equipment which indicates the plane's glide slope in poor visibility was also not in working order.
