Killer drought devastates Adelaide community in EC

Almost 20 cattle have died in the last week as conditions remain dire in the drought-stricken region of Adelaide in the Inxuba Local Municipality of the Eastern Cape.

Democratic Alliance councilor, Ernie Lombard, said four lifeless cows were found along various roadsides in town, while another emerging farmer reported that 14 of his cattle died due to starvation.

He said while residents from around the country have responded to the water crises through water donation initiatives - it simply is not enough.

Lombard said since the local dam has dried up, animals are starving and areas in at least two townships have spent the past four months with their taps running dry.

"Due to this terrible drought there are a lot of cattle on the municipal commonage and there is absolutely nothing left for them to eat. They are going into town, going into gardens and anything slightly green is destroyed."

Lombard further called for additional donations of both food for livestock as well as water which will be distributed throughout the town.

"We would be extremely grateful if anyone can assist by providing water whether it's stilled water or drinkable water, whatever the case may be."

"When it comes to fodder for the animals, we would appreciate any assistance, we are also busy with the animal welfare in town to get them involved. They have offered to assist but being such a small community, funds are extremely scarce."
