Four people, including a couple, have died after drinking homemade brew at the community of iLitha outside King Williams’s Town.

Eastern Cape Health Department spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo says this brings to 16 the number of people who’ve died in recent weeks from drinking these concoctions.

He told Algoa FM News that in the latest incident, one person died at iLitha, where the homemade brew had been consumed, while the other three passed away shortly after being admitted to the Cecilia Makiwane Hospital in East London.

Kupelo said the 16 fatalities had been recorded in the areas of Keiskammahoek, King William’s Town and Stutterheim.

He said nine people were still being treated at Stutterheim Hospital.

Kupelo said the Health Department was urging people to refrain from consuming these harmful substances as they’re endangering their lives.
