Police officer drives 87 km to help deliver baby boy

Paramedics arrive on scene to cut the umbilical cord of a baby boy born with the help of Warrant Officer Heidi Kroutz.

SAPS

An Eastern Cape police officer went beyond the call of duty when she assisted a 22-year-old woman who had gone into labour.

Warrant Officer Heidi Kroutz drove 87 km to Damsedrift farm in Baviaanskloof when all other efforts to get an ambulance to the patient had failed.

When W/O Kroutz arrived, the baby boy was already on his way.

She assisted the mother, who was in severe pain and discomfort, by calming her down and talking her through the delivery.

Provincial Police Spokesperson Colonel Sibongile Soci says by the time paramedics arrived, all they had to do was cut the umbilical cord.

She says mom and baby are doing just fine.
