A toddler who was kidnapped in Port Elizabeth on Friday has been reunited with his family.
The 3-year-old was with his 52-year-old grandmother at a beach in Summerstrand when a woman, claiming to be from Schauderville struck up a conversation.
The suspect, who introduced herself as Megan, first went with the grandmother to buy some alcohol and later offered to get some cigarettes.
"Megan" took the child with her and never returned.
Police Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says the homeless woman and the child were found in a shack shortly after 10 am on Sunday morning, deep in the bushes in Victoria Park Drive.
She told police that when she returned from the shop she did not see the grandmother and decided to take the child home with her. She was arrested when she could not give a reason as to why she did not contact the police.
Naidu says the malnourished boy was taken to Dora Nginza for a routine check-up, before being reunited with his family.
The suspect will appear in court on Monday on a charge of kidnapping.
Police thanked the media and public for their assistance in tracking down the suspect.
