Eastern Cape police have opened an inquest docket following the death of a 54-year-old man in a shack fire in Moeggesukkel, Kariega.
Spokesperson, Captain Gerda Swart says Kamesh police responded to a complaint of a house on fire on Friday evening.
She says the fire department, who was already on the scene, succeeded in putting out the flames.
Swart says the burnt remains of the man was found under the debris.
The cause of the blaze is not yet known and the name of the deceased will be released after formal identification is completed.
