A couple from Kariega accused of trafficking infant twin girls in exchange for R50 per day has been released on warning as they were unable to pay bail.
The twin's 35-year-old mother was denied bail in the Uitenhage Magistrates Court because the court could not establish her physical address.
All three accused are being charged with four counts of human trafficking.
A spokesperson for the Nasional Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Anelisa Ngcakani says it is alleged that when the 35-year-old mother became pregnant she reached an agreement with her co-accused to sell her unborn child to them in exchange for R50 per day, and for other items like food and stress medication.
She says the mother was unaware that she was pregnant with twins at the time.
Ngcakani says she gave birth to the twin girls on the 27th of May this year and was discharged the following day where she immediately gave her children to the unemployed couple.
All three were arrested on the 2nd of June.
A medical examination revealed that the babies were malnourished, underweight and that one had a cellulitis bacterial infection under one of her arms.
The matter was postponed to the 26th of July for further investigation.
