Eastern Cape police are on a manhunt for four suspects who shot a Kareedouw police official.
Spokesperson, Lieutenant Gerda Swart says the constable was on patrol at around 2 am on Thursday morning, when he noticed suspicious activities at a petrol station in Van Riebeeck Street in the town.
She says the suspects were trying to open a cash safe inside the shop after overpowering two employees.
The business alarm was activated and a private security company guard responded to the alarm.
Swart says the suspects also overpowered the security guard and continued to open the safe.
She says when the constable approached them, he was shot in both legs.
The suspects fled the scene in the security company's vehicle, and police later found the vehicle abandoned on the N2.
The police official was taken to a hospital in Plettenberg Bay.
Police are investigating a case of business robbery and attempted murder.
