Sergeant Oosthuizen and Max: What a team!
Humansdorp’s diligent four-legged K9 officer Max made another bust in his illustrious career on Tuesday when he tracked down two of eight suspects and also sniffed out 429 abalone hidden in the bushes at Wavecrest, Jeffreys Bay.
Sergeant Majola Nkohli says around 3 am, members of the Jeffreys Bay Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit were conducting operations on the beaches in Jeffreys Bay, when they spotted six suspicious-looking men.
The group was found in possession of diving equipment and were arrested immediately.
Sergeant Nkohli says two other suspects fled into the nearby bushes.
The 6-year-old German Shepherd Max, who is attached to the Humansdorp K9 Unit, was dispatched to search for the men and he tracked them down just moments later.
Max also located 429 units of abalone stashed in four bags and hidden in the bushes.
Police also seized a white bakkie for further investigation.
The suspects aged between 21 and 40 were due to appear in the Humansdorp Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday on charges of illegal possession of abalone.
