A 32-year-old man is expected to appear in the Uitenhage Magistrates' Court on Thursday after he was caught in the act during a burglary on Tuesday.
Police spokesperson Captain Gerda Swart says the K9 Rex and his handler who is attached to the unit in Port Elizabeth, assisted Uitenhage police in making the arrest.
She says members responded to a robbery in progress at the Department of Education in Cannon Street, shortly before midnight.
On arrival, the suspect was spotted inside the premises and members cautiously entered the building.
Swart said with the assistance of K9 Rex, they managed to disarm the man who had a knife in his hand.
She said he was detained on a charge of housebreaking and all the stolen property that was already packed and left outside the building was recovered.
Uitenhage Station Commander, Brigadier Thandiswe Kupiso commended the members and Rex for their swift response which led to the successful recovery and arrest of the alleged suspect.
