Gqeberha SAPS K9 hound, Mufasa, played a key role in the apprehension of three of the five suspects arrested for damage to infrastructure this weekend.
Police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, said Mufasa helped to apprehend a 31-year-old suspect who was caught digging up cables in Allister Miller Drive early on Saturday morning.
She said another man managed to get away, but Mufasa assisted in nabbing the suspect who was found with a backpack full of tools.
She said in a second incident later on Saturday evening, the K9 was also called in to action when SAPS responded to a break-in at a sub-station in Eileen Avenue in Bluewater Bay.
“On arrival they found that a private security company had apprehended two suspects. Police continued searching the premises,” Janse Van Rensburg said.
“W/O Damian Theron gave the necessary warnings to anyone who might still be hiding however when there was no response, K9 Mufasa was once again released and he apprehended two suspects that were hiding inside,” she said.
Janse Van Rensburg said damage to the Aloes Sub-station is estimated at R5 million rand.
The five suspects will appear in court on Tuesday.
