K9 Diesel helps nab Gqeberha cable theft suspect

File

Two people have been arrested by police for vandalising a sub-station in Gqeberha causing damage estimated at R300 000.

Police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, said K9 and Flying Squad members received information on Saturday about a break-in at the Windvogel substation in the Northern Areas.

She said all the cables were removed and that the substation was vandalised.

The members were able to identify the suspects involved and the member from Flying Squad arrested one suspect, however, the second suspect fled into a house on Bethelsdorp Road.

Gqeberha K9 officer, Constable Shaneez Daniels, “gave the necessary warnings and due to non-compliance by the suspect”, she released police dog Diesel to assist in the arrest.

Janse Van Rensburg said cables, copper bars, saws, spanners, and side cutters were also confiscated during the arrests.

The two will appear in the Gelvandale Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges related to damaging essential infrastructure.
