Judgement reserved in McLaggan rape appeal

Judgement has been reserved in the appeal of Port Elizabeth singer, Iain McLaggan, against his rape conviction and sentence.

McLaggan was convicted by Judge Glenn Goosen in the Grahamstown High Court last year, of raping an 18-year-old British tourist in 2010 and sentenced him to eight years in prison.

However, he granted McLaggan leave to appeal and reinstated his bail.

He also granted the State leave to appeal against the leniency of the eight year sentence.

State prosecutor, advocate Nicky Turner and a court official confirmed that judgement had been reserved.

We incorrectly reported in an earlier news bulletin that McLaggan had lost the appeal and given a stiffer sentence.
