Jeffrey's Bay police made a major breakthrough in the illicit trade of abalone, following the arrest of ten suspects.
Provincial police spokesperson, Captain Khaya Tonjeni says the suspects were arrested on Friday after police acted on information received from a member of the public.
He says members from the Jeffrey's Bay Stock Theft and Endangered Species Units, with the assistance of a private company, pounced on the unsuspecting men who were busy poaching abalone at the main beach.
Nine uncleaned units of abalone were found stashed in bushes near Pagoda Street, and police also confiscated diving equipment and two vehicles.
The ten suspects, aged between 29 and 42, are due to appear in the Humansdorp Magistrate's Court on Monday on charges of the illegal possession of abalone.
