J/Bay panel beater arrested for string of alleged crimes

A 43-year-old Jeffreys Bay panel beater has been arrested following a string of events including a shooting incident in the seaside town early Tuseday evening.

Police said the drama began when the man crashed into the back of a woman's car at a traffic light.

Police spokesperson, lieutenant-colonel Priscilla Naidu, says "the man then overtook her and hit her vehicle once more on the right side."

"He then continued to drive without stopping. The woman followed him to his Olienhout street house and confronted him. A friend of the woman later arrived and while they were attempting to reason with the man, he left them outside and went inside."

Naidu says "the man's wife who was not at home at the time just arrived with her two children and while the complainant was explaining to her about the accident, the suspect emerged from the house."

"It is alleged that he walked up to Christo Khun, who was with the complainant and fired a shot hitting him in his stomach. A second shot was fired, wounding the suspect's wife in the hip. The complainant then ran for cover and the man fired four shots in her direction. She was not injured," Naidu said.

She says the suspect locked himself in the house and refused to come out when police arrived but after a short negotiation he came out and was arrested.

"The injured persons were taken to Humansdorp hospital . Khun was transferred to Greenacres hospital where he underwent emergency operation. He is in a stable condition. The suspect's wife is still in Humansdorp hospital in a stable condition," said.

"A 7.65 pistol was confiscated by police. The man will remain in police custody until his court appearance tomorrow (Thursday)."

He faces three charges of attempted murder as well as chrages of drunken, reckless and negligent driving.
