"It's in governments interest to rationalise schools" Motshekga

Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga, says its in government's interest to rationalise schools when the situation demands.

She was addressing a media conference on Tuesday, where she outlined the progress being made in various areas affecting schooling in the country.

Government has committed a large sum of money to eradicate mud-structure schools and other inappropriate school structures in the Eastern Cape and elsewhere.

However, Minister Motshekga, said government also needs to be bold about decisions to rationalise schools.

"We can't replace a mud school for 9 kids and spend R16 million, because that is what it costs us as a minimum. We should not be stopped to close schools when we feel there is a need to rationalise schools it's not viable, because you will have more teachers than learners if you are going to satisfy the curriculum needs of that school" she said.
