Twenty cases of typhoid fever were recorded between August 2020 and September this year in the Garden Route area.
Of these, 13 cases, including one death, were reported in the George region.
Western Cape Health Department spokesperson, Nadia Ferreira says this is not regarded as an outbreak since no contact could be established between individual cases.
She says the risk of typhoid is higher in populations that do not have access to safe water and adequate sanitation facilities.
Typhoid fever can be prevented by vaccination.
George municipal spokesperson, Marillia Veldkornet says symptoms include high fever, fatigue, headaches, nausea, and diarrhea.
The fever is usually spread by contaminated food or water.
