The Independent Police Investigative Directorate will be probing the shooting of a 23-year-old man in a part of Pacaltsdorp on Monday afternoon.
Police spokesperson, Captain Malcolm Pojie, confirmed the incident but provided no further details.
He said IPID would now be investigating the matter.
According to information, the deceased was allegedly involved in several house robberies and other serious crimes in the area.
Shortly after the incident an angry crowd gathered at the scene and threw stones at the police.
Pojie said SAPS members used rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.
