IPID to probe EC police shooting

Residents of Mzamba in the Mbizana Municipality say they want the local police station to be closed down.

The call was made at a community meeting on Wednesday after residents said police shot dead four people who were reportedly looting rice from a truck that had overturned on Tuesday.

Community spokesperson, Mzamo Dlamini, says 11 people were injured when police opened fire after alleging that they had been attacked by people when they tried to stop them from carting away the rice.

Dlamini said residents are also planning a march on the local police station.

"People are really angry and they are even saying that this police station doesn't seem to be helping the people, instead it has criminals who are killing them (local people) and they are now very angry. Some of the police who are renting in the area they don't want to see them as of today (Weds)," he said.

Meanwhile, Eastern Cape police said reports that four people were killed are incorrect and that two people had succummed to their injuries.

Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Marinda Mills, says they were 34-year-old Mhlophe Cele and 19-year-old Silindile Ndzimakhwe.

The matter is now being investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate.

IPID spokesperson, Moses Dlamini, said "two dockets of murder and 11 counts of attempted murder have been opened. The investigation in still in its early stages and we sent our investigators to the area....."
