Cathcart residents march against crime 'wave'

Cathcart residents who are fed up with crime and lawlessness, closed their shops and streets on Wednesay to march to the police station to hand over a memorandum.

Brad Lee of the community police forum says every month end, when workers are paid, crime and lawlessness, vandalism and looting reigns.

Lee told Algoa FM News that a respected 70-year-old man was attacked.

"Last weekend on Saturday evening an elderly farmer who was actually just locking up the bowling club in Cathcart surprised a group of intruders who had broken and he was beaten very, very badly. He is still in a coma in hospital and his prospects are doubtful. We don't know if he's actually going to make," he said.

Lee says the lawlessness seem to be a regular occurrence in the town.

"You have tons of criminals hovering trying to rob people. You have lots of drunk people pick-pocketing, fightin and it tends to escalate throughout the weekend.
