The Independent Police Investigative Directorate is investigating the death of a 23-year-old man who was fatally wounded during a protest at Bedford in the Eastern Cape.
Provincial Police Spokesperson Brigadier Marinda Mills says the group of people gathered in front of the Bedford municipality blocking the road with drums, tree branches, stones and setting rubbish alight. She said attempts by the police to negotiate with the group leaders failed and they moved down another street towards Bedford's township.
Mills says local and public order police were truying to stop the protesters and also carry out arrests but were surrounded by a group of people who attacked them with stones and bricks. Shots were fired and the crowd dispersed.
The body of the diseased was then discovered. Two people were arrested and charged with public violence.
