A Port Elizabeth magistrate will decide this week whether anyone can be held responsible for the death of Despatch rugby player, Edward van Dyk.
Nineteen-year-old Van Dyk died in Livingstone Hospital in July 2010, a day after undergoing surgery for a broken leg.
During the inquest into his death this week, the court heard that nurses on duty were meant to check Van Dyk's condition half-hourly, according to the doctor's instructions. However, this was not done.
Several nurses who testified on Tuesday revealed that there had only been three nurses on night duty attending to 45 patients in the intensive care unit at Livingstone Hospital.
One nurse, Felicity Lean, told the court there had not been enough staff members to deal with all the patients.
