Police are searching for an inmate who escaped from the prison at Graaff-Reinet on Tuesday afternoon.
A Correctional Services spokesperson, Zama Feni, says 35-year-old James Memani, escaped shortly after 5pm, while offenders were being served supper.
He had been an inmate since 24 January 2012 after being found guilty of housebreaking.
The department's Regional Commissioner, Nkosinati Breakfast, says security officials have already been deployed in strategic areas to search and find the escapee, and that police have also been alerted.
