Police in Port Elizabeth were called out to the N2 near the old traffic department in Sidwell on Tuesday after a member of the Afriforum Neighbourhood Watch from Walker Drive, noticed an injured man walking in the road with his hands tied behind his back.
Police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says the man, whose hands were tied up in chains, alleged that he had been assaulted.
She says he told police that he was beaten up by several men in Motherwell because he spent money they gave him instead of using it to fix a tyre.
The man further alleged that they bound his hands before pushing him into the boot of their car.
Colonel Naidu says according to the man they were driving towards New Brighton when he managed to get out of the boot.
He is currently being treated at a local hospital and has declined to open a case as yet.
