The Eastern Cape Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Department says all plans to send boys in the province for initiation must end immediately.

Department spokesperson Mamnkeli Ngam says the decision follows Sunday’s announcement that the country is moving to lockdown level 4 for the next two weeks.

Ngam said for initiates who are yet to graduate, parents must ensure that there are no celebrations and that they comply with Section 19 of the Disaster Management Regulations.

MEC Xolile Nqatha welcomed the presidential announcement and called on all stakeholders involved in the practice to cooperate.

"The 3rd wave is raging and we must all work together to ensure no mushrooming of new amabhuma in our areas. Our law enforcement agencies stand ready to deal with any deviations to the regulations including closing down illegal amabhuma, " said MEC Nqatha.
