Infant saved from mentally unstable mother

A complaint of domestic violence attended to by two police officials saved the life of a 2-month-old baby girl from being squeezed to death by her mother, who was later admitted to Uitenhage Provincial Hospital for mental observation.

The members from Kwanobuhle Visible Policing, Sergeant Neville Douws and Constable Ronel Wesso received a complaint of domestic violence from the Community Service Centre about an altercation between a man and the child's 17-year-old mother.

Constable Wesso noticed that the woman was squeezing the baby excessively, and acted swiftly to remove her from her seemingly confused mother.

The baby did not sustain any injuries, and was released in the care of her maternal grandmother.

The case was referred to social workers, and no criminal case was opened.
