Infant left abandoned in morgue as parents cant pay for her burial

Police have managed to track down the parents of a three-month-old baby who was abandoned at Grey Hospital in Qonce last month.

The 30-year-old mother, who registered as Anelisa Moyeni brought the baby to the hospital on the 16th of March, in critical condition.

At the time she told the hospital that she had a home birth in December and that she was a single mother who did not know the whereabouts of the father.

A spokesperson for the Department of Health Yonela Dekeda says the infant died later in the evening.

She says it is alleged that Moyeni approached the hospital mortuary, requesting that the child be cremated.

A week later when she did not show up to claim the body a search was launched involving social workers and police.

Dekeda says both parents were traced with the help of valuable information from the public.

The parents, who live together, informed the police that they did not have money to bury the child as they both survive on a R350 social grant.

They were advised to apply for a paupers burial and were directed to the relevant departments.

No charges have been laid against the parents and no arrests have been made.
