Hunt underway for suspects after five killed in brutal attack

Eastern Cape police have launched a manhunt for eight suspects who gunned down a business person and four other people in an attack on the N2 near Tsolo junction.

Police spokesperson, Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana, said the attack occurred late on Friday afternoon.

He said the victims were travelling towards in the direction of Qumbu in two vehicles, a Mercedes Benz and a Toyota Double cab bakkie, when about eight gunmen opened fire on the vehicles.

“During the incident, three deceased believed to be body guards who were escorting the driver of the Mercedes Bends were disarmed by the suspects and all their fire-arms and cell phones taken away.”

Kinana said the driver of the Mercedes Benz and a passenger, said to be his brother, died on the scene.

He said the unidentified suspects fled in two bakkies, a Ford Ranger and a Toyota.

Police have registered five murder cases and armed robbery. No arrest made at this stage.

The names of the deceased have not yet been released.

Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nomthetheleli Mene has expressed shock at the brutal killing of the five people and has ordered an immediate pursuit and arrest of the culprits.
