CCTV equipment worth R45 million, currently gathering dust in storage, will finally be installed to get Nelson Mandela Bay's surveillance system functional again to assist in fighting crime.

Those were the words of Executive Mayor Gary van Niekerk who took to the social media platform Facebook to heap praise on Metro Police Sergeant Ntsikelelo Konono.

Mayor Van Niekerk lauded Sergeant Konono for his "diligence and commitment to your calling as a law enforcement officer".

This comes after the Sergeant - who was off duty at the time - allegedly caught a suspect red-handed while vandalising the Jeff Masemola Hall in Kariega on Saturday.

The suspect is currently in police custody at the Kwanobuhle police station and is expected to appear in court soon.

Responding to the alleged crime mayor Van Niekerk said the municipality would soon be installing the CCTV equipment worth R45-million in an effort to help protect life and limb.

The CCTV cameras would also be used to prevent serious damage to municipal infrastructure.

Van Niekerk, who was voted in as mayor on 26 May following the ousting of the DA's Retief Odendaal, said the multi-million rand uninstalled CCTV cameras had been "gathering dust".

Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said SAPS confirmed that a suspect was detained on charges of possession of suspected stolen property by an officer of Metro Police.
