Hundreds of seal pups relocated to seal island

More than five hundred seal pups have been relocated to the seal Island in Mossel Bay since hundreds of baby seals washed up on beaches in and around town since Friday.

Hundreds of baby seals are born on the seal island every year but due to heavy surf conditions, they were being washed out on shore.

The seal pups are still continuing to wash out on beaches in Hartenbos, Diaz Beach and Bayview.

A temporary emergency station has been set up at the Mossel Bay Harbour.

Craig Viljoen from Incident Support Services in Mossel Bay asked the public not to take the animals home but to report the location of the seal pups to local life savers for guidance.

Collection points have been established and the rescuing of the seals are continuing to take place.
