Hundreds left homeless as fire destroys hundreds of shacks inEast London

East London fire fighters have brought a massive blaze in Duncan Village under control.
And, according to the fire department, the number of shacks affected or destroyed could be as high as 300.
Police spokesperson, Stephen Marais, says fire fighters are busy damping down hot spots after which they will go in a check for any casualties or fatalities.
Marais also said that earlier, emergency services came under attack from the local community as they tried to move in to fight the fire.
He said local residents have gathered in the streets that is now filled with home appliances like fridges and TV's.
Ward councillor, Mlandeli Mateke, says they are taking down details of those left homeless by the blaze.
He says after the assessment those left homeless will be accommodated at the Gompo community hall.
