Human rights commission to investigate EC schools

The Human Rights Commission has confirmed that it will investigate conditions at 1 049 schools in the Eastern Cape that do not have proper toilet facilities.

DA MPL, Edmund van Vuuren, says they appealed to the Commission to conduct the probe after Education MEC Mandla Makhupula confirmed that one in five schools have inadequate sanitation or no toilets at all.

Van Vuuren says this is a human rights violation on an unprecedented scale, with an estimated 260 000 children attending school each day without proper sanitation facilities.

He says they've now requested the names and physical addresses of the affected schools from the MEC to enable the HRC to conduct site-visits.
