Abalone dealers were dealt a heavy blow after members of the Cookhouse Highway Patrol confiscated abalone worth more than R1.3 million on Monday.
Police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said a high-speed chase ensued between the police and the driver of a Toyota Avanza, on the N10 towards Cradock from Cookhouse.
Police managed to bring the vehicle to a standstill, approximately 40 km outside of Cradock.
Upon searching the vehicle, police discovered nine bags containing 1 253 units of abalone, found hidden under bags and a black plastic.
A 35-year-old suspect was arrested and detained in terms of the Marine Living Resource Act for the possession and transportation of abalone.
The suspect is expected to appear in court soon.
Sarah Baartman District Commissioner, Major General Zolani Xawuka applauded the dedication and commitment of the members.
"It seems that criminals are not heeding to our warnings.
"They must know that we will not hesitate to arrest them if they are found using our roads to transport illegal goods," he said.
In July, two suspects were arrested with illegal abalone worth R3.8 million.
