Housebreaking suspect fatally wounded

A man who allegedly broke into a flat in South End in Gqeberha was fatally wounded after vandalising the unit and setting it on fire.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said Humewood SAPS were alerted at around 17:45 to the shooting and the fire.

She said when police arrived on the scene in Gladstone Road they found the body of a man lying outside.

“It is further alleged that this unknown person got into a flat on the 1st floor and started to vandalise it. The suspect started throwing stuff out of the flat and also set it alight,” Naidu said.

She said private security was at the scene when the owner of the flat arrived.

“The suspect allegedly jumped through the window and landed on the ground where he then picked up a shard of glass and lunged toward one of the security officials. He was fatally wounded by the official,” Naidu said.

She said he is unknown at this stage, and “cases of housebreaking and arson have been registered against the deceased and an inquest is opened  in respect of his death.”
