A former DA activist found guilty of crimen injuria and criminal defamation over claims that former Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor Athol Trollip had offered her a bribe was sentenced to three years imprisonment - suspended for five years - in the PE Magistrate's Court on Thursday.
Nontuthuzelo Jack will, however, be under house arrest for the duration of the three years and she was also ordered to do community service.
The 47-year-old claimed that Trollip had offered her a bribe to dig up dirt on former DA provincial chairperson, Veliswa Mvenya.
Her claims were published in a local newspaper in the run-up to the municipal elections in 2016.
Jack was also sentenced to two years imprisonment - suspended for five years - for making false statements under oath.
In a media statement, Trollip said the sentence should serve as a warning to future or potential political pawns. "It will inevitably be them and not the masterminds that are held to account," he said. "They will have to bear the brunt of the court's decisions."
Trollip added that he was pleased that his public reputation has remained intact and that he has been vindicated in all three of these despicable defamation cases.
