A robber was shot dead on Wednesday night when three men broke into a house in Braelyn, East London.
Police Captain Stephen Marais says a man in his mid to late forties was in the house with his wife and grandchildren when three men with guns threatened them.
Marais says the home owner fired at the robbers with his licenced firearm.
One of the robbers, a foreign national, was killed in the shoot-out in which a number of shots were fired.
Marais says the two other robbers fled on foot.
A case of armed robbery is being investigated an inquest docket has been opened into the death of the suspect.
