The Eastern Cape Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs says it is well positioned for the upcoming local government elections next week Wednesday.Addressing the media on the province's state of readiness on Wednesday, COGTA MEC, Fikile Xasa, says 52 voting stations have been identified as hotspots in various areas around the province.
Xasa says security will be intensified at all focus areas which include some voting stations in Nelson Mandela Bay Metro."We will at least consolidate deployment of police in those areas. I hope we will be able to deliver free and fair elections in those areas as well".
Xasa says all Home Affairs Department offices would be extending working hours leading up to - and on election-day.
He says there are more than 15 000 smart ID cards and 7 000 green ID documents that have not yet been collected.In order to assists communities to access these documents, Home Affairs will be open on Saturday the 30th of July from 8am-5pm; Monday the 1st of August from 8.30am-6pm; Tuesday the 2nd and Wednesday the 3rd of August from 8.30am-7pm.
