Hefty sentence for clerk who swindled millions

A woman who stole over R13 million rand from the Eastern Cape Training Centre in Gqeberha over 10 years has been given a lengthy jail sentence.

The National Prosecuting Authority says 65-year-old Estelle Burgess was jailed in the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court to 15 years behind bars on 972 counts of fraud.

NPA spokesperson, Anelisa Ngckani, says she pleaded guilty to the crimes in February.

Burgess was employed as a creditors clerk at ETC when swindled the training organisation of R13.4 million between November 2004 up until September 2014.

She was arrested by the Hawks in 2019.
