Three foreign nationals who took part in a worldwide scam by sending cellphone users congratulatory text messages claiming they had won the lotto have been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment each in the Port Elizabeth Commercial crime court.
Nigerian nationals Dominique Nwafor, Henry Oehaeri and Frederick Umunde were convicted on Tuesday on three counts of fraud of over R100 000.
State Prosecutor Shadrack Tameki says millions of SMSes were sent out informing cellphone users that they had won R1 million.
According to Tameki, the scam affected thousands of cell phone users worldwide.
The three accused were tracked down to Johannesburg in August 2010 after they defrauded three Port Elizabeth residents.
