East London police are puzzling over the discovery of a headless corpse on a city beach.
Police spokesperson, Captain Stephen Marais, says they were summoned to the Esplanade by a life-guard who made the grisly find.
He picks up the story.
"This morning roundabout 9am, police were summoned to the Esplanade where we met up with a lifeguard who walked along the beach. He discovered the body lying on the rocks. The body had several open wounds and was lying halfway in the sea and a storm-water drain. At this point in time it is very difficult to say whether or not the body washed out from the pipe or came from the sea"
Marais says the police's K-9 unit was called in to assist in the search for the man's head.
"Warrant officer Lesley with his K9 rescue dog 'Buti' started searching the area and as they were about to leave the scene the dog managed to find the head. At this stage we have opened up an inquest. The body will be taken to a government mortuary to discover the exact cause of death" he said.
