The Anti-Corruption Unit of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation – better known as the Hawks – on Wednesday said it had arrested three suspects aged 34, 36 and 52 on suspicion of fraudulently issuing road worthy certificates at a testing station in George.
In a statement the Hawks said an examiner, his assistant and a foreign national were arrested on Tuesday.
“The trio have been on the unit’s radar for a while following allegations of fraud and corruption, apparently committed at TJ’S testing station in George,” said Captain Lloyd Ramovha.
“It is alleged that the suspects were working in cahoots to process road worthy certificates for unroadworthy vehicles, unduly pocketing the proceeds in the process.”
Commenting on the arrests Western Cape, Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation’s Provincial Acting Head, Brigadier, Mzwandile Ndlovu, said: “It is the our mandate to free society from the clutches of corruption, we shall continue to do so without fear, favour or prejudice”.
The suspects are expected to appear in the George Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, where they will face charges relating to fraud and corruption.
