Hawks slate conduct of ANC members in Amathole

The Hawks in the Eastern Cape has slated the conduct of the regional secretary of the ANC in the Amathole District Municipality.

This week ANC ADM regional secretary, Teris Ntutu, led a group to the Hawks East London office to hand over a petition protesting the arrest of several top people, including the Mayor of the Amathole District Municipality, on charges of fraud.

Mayor Nomasikizi Khonza and a group of other people appeared in court last week for fraud, reportedly involving an amount of six million rand. The mayor and the ANC in the Amathole District subsquently issued statements accusing the Hawks of bias and prejudice against what they said was the legitimate leadership in the Amathole District. But, in a statement issued on Wednesday, the head of the Hawks in the Eastern Cape, Major-General Meshack Nogwanya, said that the conduct of Ntutu seeks to indirectly interfere with the investigation and/or witnesses .

"It must be known that whoever intimidate direct or indirect the operation of law shall face the wrath of the law. Obstructing the police in the performance of their duties, is a serious offence which is further tantamount to defeating the ends of Justice"He said they will consult the prosecution in the fraud matter on the way forward as there seems to be an indirect violation of bail conditions or interference with witnesses."I wish to put on record that accused appeared before East London Magistrate court and were granted bail ranging from R15 000 and R5 000 accordingly. The Court and the investigating team agreed on various bail conditions which include not to interfere with investigation, witnesses and others which I will not mention herein as the matter is sub judice" he said
