Hawks make progress on Buffalo City Mandela probe

The Eastern Cape Department of Local Government says it will not be sending a forensic investigator to Buffalo City Metro to probe the scandal around the provision of transport services for Nelson Mandela memorial services in different parts of the Metro and the Province.

Buffalo City Metro has been under the spotlight after a R10 million tender was awarded for the transportation of the public to the different places where Mandela's memorial service were held last December.

The Daily Dispatch later published stories alleging discrepancies involving the allocation of these funds.

The spokesperson for the Department of Local Government, Mvusiwekhaya Sicwetsha, says MEC Mlibo Qoboshiyane saw no need to assign a forensic investigation into the matter as the Hawks are already investigating.

"An investigation into the matter by the Hawks are in a very advanced stage so the MEC felt that any parallel process would be a wasteful duplication of what is being done already. The department will monitor the process and liaise with the Hawks" he said

Meanwhile, Hawks spokesperson Paul Ramoloka says a lot of progress has been made on the investigations.

"We do confirm that our investigation in Buffalo City are still underway, we are not at liberty to reveal the progress but we can confirm that progress is being made" he said
