Harbour container handling operation to receive a boost

Port Elizabeth harbour's container handling operation has received a boost with the delivery of two multimillion rand ship to shore cranes.

The cranes will be used to move shipping containers in the port.

The equipment was manufactured and assembled in Durban seven years ago and commissioned at the end of 2005.

Transnet Port Terminals Eastern Cape General Manager, Siya Mhlaluka, said that the relocation of the cranes to Port Elizabeth is part of a programme to boost handling operations over the next few years.

The cranes arrived fully assembled in Port Elizabeth on board the Chinese heavy lift vessel, ZHEN HUA 27, and will be put into operation this month.
