Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize has expressed concern about the coronavirus situation in the Eastern Cape.
According to the Minister, the Eastern Cape has similar numbers to Gauteng but had recorded the second-highest mortality rate.
He added that its proximity and inter-connectedness with the Western Cape makes the province especially vulnerable.
In addition, there was an increase in the infection rate among healthcare workers, both in the public and private sectors.
As at June 6, the Eastern Cape had recorded 258 Covid-19 positive healthcare workers and 14 Covid-19-related deaths.
Mkhize says he’ll be returning to the Eastern Cape later this week while the deputy health minister will travel to the Western Cape to "continue ministerial oversight there".
