‘Ground-breaking’ carbon initiative announced

A partnership has been announced to introduce a ground-breaking carbon initiative that seeks to preserve the environment and green South Africa through the planting of millions of trees.

Volkswagen Financial Services said on Wednesday that it had joined forces with Food & Trees for Africa to introduce the initiative that also seeks to develop local community enterprises and agri-businesses.

According to Chris Wild of Food and Trees for Africa, this initiative will provide excluded communities with an opportunity to join the financial services sector and empower them in the fight against Global Climate Change.

“This is truly an exciting innovation in Enterprise and Supplier Development within the Financial Services Sector. This initiative will lead to the planting of millions of trees and the creation of hundreds of sustainable businesses in communities,” he said.

Mark Hunt, Head of Brand & Marketing at VWFS said, “We at VWFS SA are delighted to be partnering with FTFA on this initiative. VWFS SA is excited because Environmental sustainability and contributing to the creation of green local businesses falls very much in line with our local and international underlying values.”

The statement said that this first-of-its-kind programme will seek to create jobs and sustainable livelihoods through carbon offsetting and community greening.

“Small businesses and environmental entrepreneurs will be supported to develop organic farms, enterprise orchards, and community nurseries. The inherent sustainability of these businesses lies in the fact that they will form part of a larger carbon credit initiative which has many applications within Financial Services and other sectors”.
